HBP predictions

So, like everyone else in fandom, I am going to put down a few thoughts on HBP.

Fist order of business:
Snape is not evil. NOT FOR A SECOND! I would bet my life Dumbledore wanted Snape to kill him, and the two of them had it planned out from the beginning. In book seven at a crucial moment Snape will betray Voldemort and help Harry to victory.

Now, I know I'm biased, but let's think:

1) Dumbledore is not an idiot, and has yet to be wrong about anyone's intentions. Yes, we are told he makes mistakes, but Harry TELLS him about an unbreakable vow. I doubt that Dumbledore would let something like that go if he hadn't heard of it before.
Dumbledore: So, Severus, what is this I hear about an Unbreakable Vow?
Snape: Oh...um...I've sworn to never allow the other children to make fun of Draco for still sleeping with his stuffed elephant, Toofules. That's Narcissa for you...ha ha...paranoid.
Dumbledore: Jolly good, carry on.

2) Hargid mentions hearing them (Dumbledore and Snape) arguing at the beginning of the book. They assume that it's about Malfoy and what Dumbledore wants Snape to do about him. It probably is. I think it's about what Dumbledore wants Snape to do in the way of KILLING HIM FOR DRACO'S SAKE.

3) the two of them are described as stopping and looking into one another's eyes in the middle of a battle. They are both skilled in Occlumency. Snape looks angry and disgusted. This is because Dumbledore is begging him to take his life and Snape doesn't want to do it, not because he hates Dumbledore

4) Snape flips the fuck out when Harry calls him a coward, looking hysterical and full of pain. This is likely because Snape just killed a man he counted as a friend and superior on the same man's orders, in which case being called coward would rather piss him off.

5) Even when Harry is coming after him Snape defends and continues to teach him, deflecting Harry's spells rather than casting any of his own. He reminds Harry not to use Unforgivable curses, he keeps the other DEs from doing anything to Harry, he get's everyone out of the castle before they can kill anyone in the Order/students. Yes, he mentions that they have been ordered not to kill Harry, but I can't imagine that such orders would stop evil!Snape from putting Harry under the Crutacious at the very least. His shouting helpful advice makes him more than suspect of secret goodness, I think. Snape doesn't care for Harry, but he's still good and will not hurt him because Dumbledore has told him not to.

6) It is unlikely that Dumbledore would have taken Harry with him on a highly dangerous mission if he had not known that he was going to die soon (not to mention his telling Harry everything he knew about Voldie), it is also unlikely that Dumbledore would have given Draco the advantage like he did by stunning Harry first. There was no reason he couldn't have defended himself and THEN gotten Harry, unless, as I said, it was all planned. He clearly planned to die and planned that Harry would see it.

7) Why would Snape stun Flitwick and tell Hermione and Ron to stay put if he were evil? He would blast them to pieces and eliminate future problems. He was probably trying to keep them out of danger by doing what he did.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way

The missing locket: So in the possession of Regulus, who fetched it in a last act of heroism greater than anything his hothead brother has yet been capable of, and proving once and for all that Slytherins are cooler. (There is mention of a locket "that none of them can open" in the cleaning up of Gimmauld Place in OotP, but it's probably been hawked or tossed by now.)

Harry: Likely a horcrux. From what I've read elsewhere, people have mixed feelings about this. The main argument against seems to be "Voldemort wouldn't be that insane and put that much power in the hands of his enemies." My question - is he? If Harry is supposedly the only one who can destroy Voldemort, and the only way to destroy Voldemort is to destroy all the horcruxes, and Harry IS a horcrux, that would rather mean he has to kill himself, wouldn't it? And Voldemort, who fears death more than anything, would probably be arrogant enough believe that anyone who could match him magically would also be like him in other ways. I wouldn't be surprised if Voldemort is banking on Harry not being willing to sacrifice himself in order to destroy him, and it isn't a bad bet. When JKR says she's not afraid to kill off Harry, this might just be what she means, and having Our Boy jump into the fires of Mt. Doom to destroy the one ring himself would be an epic and very final end to the books. We'll see.

Also, I havn't seen anyone come out and say it, so I will: Ginny, I hate you you big canon sue!
I can buy Harry having feelings for someone he didn't notice before. I can buy Ginny having layers. I can buy her being pretty (so pretty even really good looking and selective slytherins take notice of her hotness), OR exceptionally good with charms and curses (so even the twins fear and respect her mad skillz), OR great at Quidditch (enough to lead Gryffindor to victory as seeker!), OR more outspoken and rebellious (to the point that she ignores Harry to the point of rudeness and is obnoxious to her mother for no good reason.),OR funny (the hilarious jokes Harry goes on about, that we never actually get to hear), OR better at standing up for the little people (read Luna and Neville).
All at once? Not only does it make her seem forced into an unnatural transition as a character, it made me quite literally wish she was the body on the floor Draco mentions during the fight. I wanted her DEAD she bugged me so much. Sure, Ginny has always been obnoxious, but she was a quiet obnoxious fangirl who stepped to the sidelines before. Now she is a loud, obnoxious, "independent woman" of infinite perfection, and we are treated to endless odes by various characters to her SPESHULness. She's like a hideous fusion of Molly and Lily, which, now that I think about it, makes me REALLY question Harry's mental health, as he seems to have strong sexual attraction to a sort of next-generation combination of his two mother figures. Great.

On a lighter note, Joining Snape, Lucius, Viktor, Draco, Voldemort, and Lupin are Blaise, Fenrir, and (snerk!) Rufus (mock me not - glasses? lope-y grace? silver-streaked hair? businesslike manner? rawr, baby!) for my OMG hott! book six picks.

Now if we could only get some more awesome female characters up and running so Bellatrix and Hermione don't have to bear all of my weird femslash obsession.

Ahh! All in all, and even with the endless teen dating nonsense in the middle of this book, I loved it.
And Snape! He was so cool and perfect and shiny! <3
Anyone else, any thoughts, arguments or additions?

I love your arguments. <3 I have to say, the thought did pass my mind. I try not to make judgement, though, and keep passive 'til the actual book comes out.

As for Harry being a horcrux--I just don't think so. You're hypotheses there seem a bit extreme. After all; right in the first book does not Voldemort tell Quirrell to kill Harry? And when could Voldemort have made him one? In that brief moment when he cast Avada Kedavra on Harry when he was a baby? . . . Unlikely, I think. But maybe that's just me.

I love Ginny! You're jealous. 'Nuff said. >>

And remember that Snape is described in the book as quite unattractive (ignore his actor for the movie. ;P)

Oooh, I had forgotten about that scene where he tells Quirrel to kill him. Still, that does not bother my theory overmuch, but I should have addressed it -
We see with the journal that Voldemort isn't afraid to lose one or two horcruxes, which seems to be something people are ignoring. He has a bunch of them, he doesn't CARE if one or two are gone so long as he can still come back with any one of the rest. That journal was MADE to be FOUND, and thus quite possibly destroyed. Thus, making Harry a horcrux isn't so much giving power to your enemies as it is forcing the hand of the person who is supposedly the only one able to destroy you. Voldemort thinks that Harry is the only one who can kill him. And he fears death more than anything (and projects that fear on others). He thinks Harry = only one who can kill me. So if Harry dies = still have other horcruxes and if Harry lives = still have Harry as horcrux. I think HE thinks Harry would never kill himself for the cause, because he cannot conceive of anyone (read: any equal) EVER being willing to make that sacrifice. And if Harry isn't then its win/win for him. But Harry will, and it will be all < / harry > at the end of book seven.
I dunno, it makes perfect sense to me.
But we shall see!

I love Ginny! You're jealous. 'Nuff said. >>
Jealous? Of a Weasly? Me? Such insult will not be borne! It is a duel, Madame, I demand satisfaction!
But seriously? Not so much, or I think I would have been hating Tonks as well (and to my surprise, I wasn't). I would have loved to see more development over time of her character. It was like all of a sudden in book five "BAM! I am new BAD@$$ kewlies!Ginny, ph34r me!" More about it, said better than I can here: http://www.livejournal.com/community/the_snarkery/22654.html. I don't buy (and I REALLY don't like) her awesomeness as a slangy teen all of a sudden.
That said, it is not my ship, and I AM biased. She has always annoyed me, but her forefront in Harry's thoughts was what made me want her so dead at the end of book six. If you like her, then I am happy for you. It comes down to opinion and personal taste of the reader here, and I can certainly see the appeal of seeing Harry finally in a rewarding relationship that is just easy and sweet, even if it isn't my personal cup of tea. The poor boy does deserve it.

And remember that Snape is described in the book as quite unattractive
Believe me, I know. Big yellow teeth, greasy hair, sallow skin. The "perfect and shiny" was more a figure of speech than an actual belief in his...um...perfectitude. I am aware that I have a silly crush on a horribly unattractive fictional character. But he's so mean and snarky and smart and talented and I have terrible taste in men and there it is. I wish I could say it was just all about the Alan Rickman.

That said, so much love to lj in general, and you specifically, for being a place I can geek about without harassing those in my household and random passersby with my HBP theories. Just having someone with different opinions on this to talk it out with is teh <3!

teh awesome.

Why was that cut off?

The Voldemort argument is such a good case. I just . . . I don't know. I don't see it somehow. Don't get me wrong--I'm not dismissing your ideas. Somehow it just doesn't seem right. I know Rowling said she'd kill off Harry with no qualms or whatever, but I feel like that just made people think "Oh, so she IS going to kill him!" I don't know. But I wonder why Dumbledore wouldn't have thought of it? Or if he had, why he wouldn't have told Harry? (Well, I guess there's always the 'second Harry knows he goes to kill himself' thing . . .)

XD You Weasly hater! How cruel! *loves the Weaslys, one and all*
I know her sudden development might have been rushed, but you can't deny that it was alluded to, in the background, of the previous book. I think Harry was just so caught up in Cho *sticks a few more needles in her Cho voodoo doll* that he wasn't noticing, and therefore the book wasn't making note of, all these things going on with Ginny.
But yes, you're very right about opinion and taste. *shrug* I've been personally rooting on Harry and Ginny since book two.

I do agree with the strange appeal Snape has. =P I'd just never refer to him as hot or anything. I think it's hilarious that people do (I can only assume these people are either only thinking of Alan Rickman, or just blatantly ignoring Rowling's colorful adjectives). And even if Alan Rickman's far from ugly, I still believe no character has been better cast for book-to-movie.

Fenrir, though? Rufus? XD I think you must be on something. =P I can only pray when you say Voldemort, as well, you mean Tom Riddle version.

Thanks for the love! ^_^v I don't mind a good fandom discussion every so often.

Weasly hater
Ha ha. Yup. Guilty. I've only ever liked Bill. I WOULD like the twins (and sometimes I do) except they are really nasty to students in other classes sometimes with no consequences, and we are supposed to laugh at it, and I always just end up thinking "OMG unfair!"

Fenrir, though? Rufus? XD I think you must be on something.
I have TERRIBLE taste in men. But then again, as a fellow Y_D perv, you must at least understand the peripheral appeal of big evil nasty werewolf men (I KNOW I'm not the only one who sees Lupin/Bill/Fenrir madness in the future) and dignified powerful politicians with glasses (and probably scars!) who want to take little jaunts and have tense conversation alone with Harry.

Ahh, when you see slash where there is no slash, you know you're in the HP fandom.

[info]halrenna

July 26 2005, 01:48:20 UTC 6 years ago

Ewww! To both of those!
I have utterly no idea what you mean by "Y_D" at all. I mean . . . I can't even guess. o.O
Oh, wait. XD yaoi_daily There it is.

And no, I really don't. ^^; I'm rather anti-yiff/furry . . . stuff. *shudder* I find utterly no appeal in Fenrir.

And Rufus? I just . . . I don't know. Her description is vague enough that he could be attractive. I just never saw him as such.

Also, I don't like slash. ^^;

Ewww! To both of those!
This made me giggle madly, just so you know.

I'm rather anti-yiff/furry
It isn't my thing either (not that I condemn it, I just really don't want to look at it). I was talking about werewolves in strictly human form. (with a HUGE EWWW! to detailed fic about the alternative thankyouverymuch).

Ha ha. Slash is hilarious and fun. It's like clue: Harry? In the lounge? With the CANDLESTICK? and WHO NOW?
MY EYES! THEY BURN!
But rock on het shipper! Fandom needs more people who walk the straight and narrow, if you'll forgive my pun.

July 26 2005, 02:06:41 UTC 6 years ago

I'm glad I could make you laugh. ^^

And I'm glad I'm not the only one out there who doesn't care for furries. >> But yes, strictly human form is fine. ^^ It's just that Fenrir only seems just barely human form . . . the book gave a rather unpleasant feel for him.

And when I say "slash" I don't just mean homosexual stuff. I mean anything putting two characters that don't belong together. Hermione/Harry slash, for example. I just despise anything non-canon, and most fanfiction in general . . .

As a member of yaoi_daily, I of course have no problem with boi love. ^.~

Actually, on an only vaguely related note, I have to say this about the whole furry "thing": People need to stop getting worked up about it on both sides. I don't get the rabid "u guyz suk + ur pervs" on the anti-furry side, and I don't get why the furries have to be so "OMG u dun understand muh bond wit teh aminals!" either.

It's at a point where it's like the "anti" people are bringing it up out of sick fascination rather than genuine disgust. Live and let look at weird animal porn (somewhere not in my range of vision, please!) is what I say.

(Oh, by the way, this is in no way directed at you. It's perfectly fine to be like "not my thing kthanxbai" when it comes up in conversation. I'm sorta rambling off about the "Kill the Furries!" and the "Furry and Proud" warring factions I see all over the net -and the news!- these days. So annoying!)

[info]halrenna

July 26 2005, 03:41:57 UTC 6 years ago

Yeah, I know what you mean on that. I don't like extremists on anything really (have you seen the flamewars for anti- and pro-fanfiction? Oh my good God).

Yeah. People who like furries can go like it. A bit too eerily close to bestiality for me, though. Not something I think I'll ever enjoy.

Has it really been on the news? O_O

[info]mumuchan

Has it really been on the news? O_O
AND the radio. And they totally sensationalize it. It's like, since it's not politically correct to hate gays anymore, they need to go after a different category in the alternative sexuality community to keep people coming back for shocks and titillation. I have had FAMILY members call me up, horrified and looking for explanations because they have seen stations covering furry conventions and think of me as some sort of internet expert. It was quite surreal.

Family (of various kinds): They say they are all over the web. Have YOU ever met any of these...furries?
Me: Just in passing. They are normal people, you know that right?
Family: Cat suit. He was wearing a cat suit. See what horrors technology has wrought.
Me: ...right.

Poor furries. I would pet them in a comforting fashion, but I have a good idea about where that fur suit has been.

<<;; Whoa whoa, people have sex in furry costumes? I did not even know that.

As with many fetishes, that like all kinds of freaks me out. I thought it was just a writing/drawing/comic kinda thing. o_o

But on the news . . . man. I need to watch the news/listen to the radio more often.

[info]mumuchan

July 26 2005, 04:18:49 UTC 6 years ago

Whoa whoa, people have sex in furry costumes? .
Yup. So glad to have been to one to open your eyes, so that you too might be able to experience this magical new feeling.

But, on a less judgmental note, not all of them do things like that, and not all furries even are sexual about being "furry". It seems to be all in matters of degree.
So long as they aren't hurting or raping animals (and to tell the truth, most are so passionate about animals, and are such activists, I don't really think this is a big worry) they can do what they like IMHO.

I need to watch the news/listen to the radio more often.
They'll do a "shocker" article about it every once in a while and pretend to cover both sides of the issue whilst making the furries look like a bunch of HUGE fanatical pervs (not too hard a lot of the time, but still...). It's all very stupid.

Ha ha, from HBP to various furry practices, all in one string of comments. Go us!

The nonsexual people who dress up in furry costumes could be cute, I think.

The sexual ones, just . . .

Okay, turning off mind now. No going in that thought direction.

And yes, go us! XD Whoo-hoo for convos!

grr the whole ginny thing was just bad news, i wanted to vomit or just fart in her general direction...and dumbledore's death=way too predictable. i hope the 7th book is full of lots of twists and turns to make up for these two potter boo-boos.

Heh, the image of you chasing Ginny down in order to submit her to nasty bodily functions appeals to the three-year-old in me.

Book seven will contain "OMG who IS Snape working for?", Draco, ZOMBIES!, and possibly dead, dead Harry. So hey, good times.

I'm dragging family members to Bombay Ice Cream tomorrow! Hopefully it will be like a mass foodie conversion. I'll have to tell you how your recommendations are received.

so...what was the verdict? have you converted them into fans?

also i'm at camp now with a boy from your class--his name is brandon. he said he's in anime club with you.

I know no brandon. You should walk up to him, scream "filthy liar" and then run away.

No, I know him. Say hi for me.

There was much likeage. I especially liked the rose and the ginger combination I got. Many compliments to your taste have been given.
